My mom, who lives in NH, just across the river from VT, sent these to me . This is her email:
It has been parked in our lot for several days. It drives out in the morning and returns around 4:30. It obviously has some connection to the railroad; several tracks run through White River Junction. Probably its owners/drivers are staying at the other hotel. Do you have any idea(s) about its function?
Obviously it’s working on the railroad, but doing what? Any ideas?

this. that’s what the company seems to focus on, “rail health.” the wheels under the chassis look like they ride along the rails and monitor their condition.

It looks like it runs along the tracks. Sperry looks like they do testing for the railroads, so that’s my bet it’s something to test tracks.

It’s what they do with the caboose now that trains don’t need them anymore.

Well, except when they don’t ...
The 11-page report released Thursday by the Federal Railroad Administration blames the broken rail for the Aug. 5, 2018 derailment. It says a track inspector for Sperry Rail Services should have recognized the problem during ultrasound testing on July 20.
Camera images from the test indicated the rail was broken, according to the report.
“It was evident that the Sperry chief operator had multiple opportunities to recognize a potential defect at the (derailment point) and follow up with a ground inspection,” the report says. “The operator’s decisions to disregard induction channel responses from the initial test and not utilize the camera images were serious oversights.”
